Is it Real?

If you are walking or driving north on Connecticut Avenue just before Nebraska Avenue in DC; look to your right at The Kitchen Guild showroom to enjoy a visual illusion. The painted trompe l'oeil mural will give you a double-take on what is real and what is painted.

Former New York artist, Josh Yavelberg, designed and painted the realistic mural of the street inside the showroom window. . Jim McCoy, owner of the Kitchen Guild, commissioned the artist to create eye-catching murals in the front window as well as at the back entrance to the showroom from the parking lot.

According to Yavelberg, “Artists have been using the trompe l'oeil (to fool the eye) technique for centuries. The positioning and incorporating the surroundings into the mural is important in creating the illusion.”

Josh Yavelberg is a figurative painter accomplished in portraits, murals and capturing scenes of people in everyday situations. He has relocated to the Metro DC area and currently living in Reston , Virginia and is available for personal or corporate commissions.
